Gareth L. Howell, President and CEO

In May 2005, Gareth Howell became President and CEO of the World Affairs Council and International Visitors Council, at the Global Center of Greater Cincinnati. He is a former Vice-Chairman, International Employment Law Committee, American Bar Association.

Until 2002, he was the New York Representative of the Swiss-based International Labor Organization (ILO), which is the United Nations agency promoting business, economic growth, employment, and labor standards. At UN headquarters he worked with ambassadors and business leaders on child and migrant labor, forced labor, post-war reconstruction and global employment.

In Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1996-97, he chaired the World Bank task force to raise $130 million for re-employment of ex-combatants. Previously, he managed development programs in Asia, and also advised the governments of China, Colombia, India, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique and Pakistan.

At the World Bank, he managed a $120 million loan portfolio, and did an assessment of economic growth and change in China (published as "China: New Skills for Economic Development", World Bank, Nov, 1993).

Formerly a Ford Motor Company executive in Europe, and Program Director at the UN Training Center in Turin, Italy, he is a University of Wales honors law graduate (magna-cum-laude) and was a magistrate in the United Kingdom. He speaks English, French, Spanish and Welsh. He and his family moved to Cincinnati in August 2004.

Deborah A. Kittner, Director of Programs

Deborah Kittner's role at the Global Center of Greater Cincinnati is Director of Programs. She is from northwestern Pennsylvania and holds B.A.s in French and International Studies, and a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from Northern Kentucky University.

Her career began in the travel industry at American Airlines as Sales Reservations Agent and American Express Corporate Travel Management Services (AMEX) as International Travel Consultant and Customer Service Manager respectively. She joined the staff at the World Affairs Council in May 2002 after having been a very active volunteer for a number of years.

She is responsible for a broad range of programming to “Engage Grassroots America in World Affairs.” These programs serve the community including students from elementary school through life-long learners; young professionals, employees, and executives in private sector businesses; civil society organizations; representatives of local, regional, and national governments; and international guests. Deborah leads volunteers and interns in this work at the Global Center as it evolves into the portal to the Cincinnati region in world affairs.

She has traveled extensively including having designed and led university professors on Faculty Development Tours through Malaysia, Brazil, India and Germany. Deb has lived in France, spent a summer in Morocco, and continues summertime explorations to Canada. She enjoys meeting people from all corners of the metropolitan Cincinnati region and the world placing value on bringing all types of people together to learn about each other.

Karyn A. Rieger, Director of Finance and Administration

Karyn joined the World Affairs Council in 1985 and currently handles all the administrative and bookkeeping duties for both Councils. Her area of responsibilities includes processing payroll, managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, monthly financial reports, cost control, and project reporting.  She also participates in development of the budget. Additionally, Karyn works closely with the auditors on preparing tax forms and all year-end financial reports.

Under the supervision of the CEO, she manages Human Resources and Personnel matters. She maintains inventory and purchases office supplies.  She also is responsible as required for planning and coordinating the facilities and logistics for the annual conferences.

In addition, Karyn supervises volunteers and interns in developing professional expertise. She assists and guides them through projects and assignments. She initiates and encourages volunteers and interns in problems solving using the best of their judgments along with their professional expertise as they learn through working at the Global Center. In essence, she is a great contributor to the younger generation in enhancing their professional experience.

Her past accomplishments were bringing the financial/accounting in-house (which was a cost reduction) and moving the financial books from paper to a computer.  She was instrumental in writing the current accounting codes to help match the needs of the organization.  She recently streamlined the processing of monthly financial's which achieved time effectiveness.

She graduated with honors from Goshen High School, and is a graduate of a two year Executive Secretary Class at Live Oaks Career Development Campus.  She has completed various accounting classes and attended several accounting and computer software-training seminars.

Karyn is currently a member and an active volunteer of the PTO for Mulberry Elementary and is Co-Chair of the only fundraiser for the school which raised over $25k for three consecutive years.  She also is part of Gov. Taft’s “Ohio Reads Program” for Milford Schools.

Jeanne Amrein, Assistant Director of Programs

A volunteer for the World Affairs Council since May 2005, her main contributions were focused in promoting and maintaining membership. As of January 2006, she came on staff with the main focus being the International Visitor Leadership Programs through the State Department. She also assists with additional programming as needed.

Graduating from Xavier University May 13, 2006 with a B.A. in International Affairs. While at Xavier she was on the Cincinnati Art Museum’s One World Wednesday Advisory Board; a member of the Xavier University Weekenders Committee, providing students with a non-alcoholic related alternative event for the weekend; and she was supervisor of the Xavier University Commuter Services.

She has completed the Washington Semester Program at American University in Foreign Policy. While at American University in Washington, D.C. she had a successful internship with Congressman Steve Chabot, Republican Representative for the First District in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Krissy Eby , Communications Associate

Krissy joined the Global Center in November of 2007. She brings with her over 16 years' work experience, with a varied background that includes computer programming, event coordinating, and administrative support in legal and risk management offices.

Growing up as a military dependent, Krissy spent time in Iceland, Japan and Alaska before settling in Indiana.

Krissy has resumed her studies at Northern Kentucky University, where she is an Honors student majoring in Public Relations and International Studies. By combining her flair for communications and passion for all things international, Krissy hopes to help facilitate cultural appreciation and understanding.
