Model APEC Summit

Model APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation)
The Model APEC simulation, similar to Model UN, puts high school teams in the positions of government ministers, where they negotiate resolutions on their assigned country’s behalf. Model APEC provides students with knowledge of contemporary world issues, such as:
- Terrorism
- APEC Nuclear free Zone
- Sustainable Development and the Environment
- Emeregency Preparedness
It also develops skills in:
- research,
- analysis
- negotiation,
- assertiveness
- critical thinking
- diplomacy and persuasion.
In addition to the Summit itself, students participate in real-time, online negotiations in the weeks leading up to the summit. This rapidly expanding event is now in its fourth year.
With the University of Cincinnati, the Global Center hosts this annual Model APEC Summit. All high schools are invited to participate in this student simulation of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. APEC summits cover topics ranging from trade and investment to environmental concerns to global politics and the war on terrorism.
Model APEC is unique to Cincinnati and to our knowledge not duplicated anywhere else. It has been tremendously well received. In 2004, there were 50 enthusiastic students, and in 2005, 125 students from 12 schools participated. 2006 drew an even bigger and eager group of almost 200 students!
Model APEC aims to become a Region-wide program by 2008 with over 20 participating schools.
