Global Center Member Meeting welcomes WACA President Barbara Propes
World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) President Barbara Propes will address members of the Global Center at the 2008 annual meeting. She represents the 87-member WACA network with foreign diplomats and the US State Department, to build a vital and diverse constituency within the American public on international affairs. Taft Stettinius and Hollister – 16th floor 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

July 25-27, 2008

Japanese High School Students studying English at Ohio University will be staying with host families in Cincinnati. HOST FAMILIES NEEDED! To host two or three students, please call the Global Center at 513-621-2320.

August 3-6, 2008

International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) visitors from Australia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Denmark, Egypt, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Namibia, Nepal, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Samoa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe. US Foreign Policy and Human Rights is the topic for this visit.

August 8-10, 2008

The Global Center is honored to welcome Fifty Fulbright students from various countries who will be studying at Ohio University in August. Students will stay with host families to experience a weekend of American culture. A closing event will take place on the Second Sunday on Main. HOST FAMILIES NEEDED! September 2008

International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP):  Promoting Tolerance through the Arts. Artists representing various disciplines will visit Cincinnati. Stops include Cincinnati Art Museum, Contemporary Arts Center, and School for Creative and Performing Arts.

October 2008

The U.S. - India Business Alliance (USIBA)
The Global Center hosts a representative from The U.S.-India Business Alliance (USIBA), a premier trade association representing American and Indian companies on bilateral trade matters in Washington and New Delhi. This most important emerging partnership in Asia will look at IT, medicine, and education. Details to be announced.

October 1, 2008

Art and Diplomacy Series: Czechoslovakia
Set against the backdrop of the exhibition Illusion and Reality: Prints by Jirí Anderle, a representative of  Czechoslovakia's government will speak about this country's place in the 21st Century. Jirí Anderle is a talented Czech printmaker who survived political oppression and censorship behind the iron curtain to create strength and will against all obstacles. Cincinnati Art Museum. 7:00 p.m.

November 2008

Senator Richard Lugar (Invited)
Senator Lugar, U.S. Senator for Indiana (Republican), will speak on Foreign Policy Challenges facing the next administration. The Senator will be on a visit representing The American Academy of Diplomacy and the World Affairs Councils of America Speakers Series. Venues and dates to be announced.

November 2008

The eyes of the world will be on America during election season. Several International visitors will be in Cincinnati to observe elections processes and results. Details to be announced when available.

International Education Summit
Emerging Careers in Environmental Sustainability is the topic for high school students this year during International Education week. Speakers from government, private industry, labor, and non-governmental organizations will share insight into new areas of job growth such as green building, renewable energy, and recycling. Students will meet face-to-face with local, national, and international representatives in these fields to learn about exciting future career choices. Academic WorldQuest
High schools teams from across the metropolitan Cincinnati region come together to compete at this annual international knowledge competition. Topics could include sports, flags, current events, economics, cinema and so on. The 1st place team wins a paid trip to Washington, DC to compete at the national level. Round up your teammates! Plan to compete at The Summit Country School this Saturday in November. 513-621-2320.

March 2009

2009 Model APEC
High school teams from Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky will represent the 21 economies of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) at a day-long meeting. Team members will role play as Heads of State, Ministers, and Advisors with the goal to arrive at consensus on real issues facing these Pacific Rim countries today. Students learn skills in diplomacy, cross cultural communications, and consensus building required for 21st Century careers.

Great Decisions
(Longest standing grass-roots, world affairs program from WACA)
Great Decisions is a public forum to discuss foreign policy issues. 2008 TOPICS include: Iraqi End-game, European Union at 50, Russia, U.S. Defense & Security Policy, and Latin America. Current groups are hosted by St. John’s Unitarian Universalist Church, Young Professionals, and Osher Lifetime Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Cincinnati.  International Education Summit
A symposium for secondary students from the tri-state area.  Students learned about international and multi-cultural programs.  Students analyzed global issues and international affairs as they listened to the keynote address or as they participated in small group discussions. Through networking opportunities as well as breakout sessions students examined why and how to take steps toward internationalizing their classes and activities at school.

Academic WorldQuest
Students demonstrated their knowledge on world affairs and competed for the right to represent the greater Cincinnati area at the national competition.   April 4-6, 2008, the Seven Hills High School team will travel to Washington, DC to represent this region.
