World In Transition

World in Transition (WIT) is a teacher training flagship Program of the World Affairs Councils of America, developed by the Southern Center for International Studies. (SCIS)

In a post 9/11 world, it has become glaringly clear the importance of a deep understanding of other people and their cultures. As our world surges forth with globalization, it affects every community and the people in it. As such, it is imperative that our students be schooled in international affairs so they can compete on the global market with students from other countries.

With a goal to increase international education and awareness, the Global Center has partnered with the Cincinnati Public School system and other area schools, to bring the World in Transition program to teachers so they can prepare students for our transitioning world..

Training the Trainer

We believe when one student is trained, only one student benefits but when a teacher is trained, hundreds of students benefit. As such, this program focuses on training -the-trainer to maximize the exposure of international affairs training to as many students as possible.

Over a two day period, teachers gain the following:

  • Professional Development Credit
  • In depth knowledge of seven regions of the world
  • Knowledge of the history, political, cultural, economic, environmental and social standpoint of the region.
  • Professional multi-media resource materials on regions of the world learned
  • Exclusive access to WIT updates on the SCIS web site in real time
  • The opportunity to train other teachers at your school after completion
  • Extensive lesson plans that aide in curricula development

Benefits to Students

Teachers who have implemented lesson plans according to WIT recommendations have observed the following improvements in their students:

  • Improved Critical thinking skills
  • Improved research capabilities
  • Improved competence at data analysis
  • Improved problem solving skills
  • Ease in leading discussion
  • Improved map analysis

The World in Transition program is fully accredited and was developed by a highly professional team of seasoned teachers and curriculum development experts. The complete package is reviewed by educators around the country to ensure the individual sets are teacher-friendly, student-oriented and highly interactive.

I recently attended a workshop, "The World in Transition" in Cincinnati, Ohio and I wanted to write to say thank you so very much for not only a wonderful workshop but also for the materials. The information in the books and videos is immense! I have already done many of the activities with my 6th grade Geography class and have shown some video clips. The information is so well put together and the discussions we have afterwards
are so rich! What a great program. Thank you so very much!

Sincerely,

"The most impressive thing about the series is the way it breaks away from traditional instruction. Instead of a reading from a boring textbook followed by a lecture, the series encourages participation from the students. The exercises offer the students an opportunity to think out of the box and offers them exposure to more than just the core issues."
